Moving in Nuremberg: what to do and when

Most stress on moving day comes from small jobs left too late: no space for the van, no boxes, a forgotten cellar. Here is a simple plan, from the day you know your date to the week after the move.

Every move is different, but the order of the jobs is almost always the same.

As soon as you know the date

  • Give notice on your old flat. As a tenant, you normally have about three months' notice. Check your rental contract.
  • Ask for moving quotes. With photos, you don't have to wait for anyone to visit. Our article on what to photograph shows what helps.
  • Decide what you won't take. Every piece you don't move saves time and money. If a lot has to go, mention it in your request: we do clear-outs too.

Four to six weeks before

  • Get a no-parking zone for the van if there is usually no space in front of the house. In Nuremberg, you apply to SÖR, the city's service for roads and public spaces, at least four weeks before the move. With the same application, you can get the permit that lets the van stand in the zone.
  • Plan who puts up the signs. They go up four days before the move, and the city doesn't put them up itself. The fees and the forms are on the city's page for moves.
  • Look into the cellar, the attic and the balcony. They are easy to forget and often full.

Moving from or to Fürth or Erlangen? Those cities have their own offices and rules.

Two weeks before

  • Get boxes and start packing what you don't use every day: books, decorations, clothes for the other season.
  • Label every box with the room it goes to in the new home. It saves a lot of carrying back and forth.
  • Change your address with your bank, insurance and employer, and set up mail forwarding with Deutsche Post (Nachsendeauftrag).

The last days

  • Pack a first-night box: documents, chargers, medicines, a kettle, towels and bedding.
  • Defrost the freezer a day before the move.
  • Keep the way clear: hallway and stairs free, boxes near the door.

On moving day

  • Read the meters for electricity, gas and water in the old and the new home, and take a photo of each.
  • Hand over the old flat with the landlord and write down any damage. Photos help here too.

After the move

Register at your new address within two weeks. For this, you need a confirmation from your landlord that you moved in (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). In Nuremberg, you can register your main home online or at a Bürgeramt.
